Check who the site is for
The first thing to look for is a clear age range. A good teen chat site says exactly who can join, for example ages 13 to 19, and puts that rule where you can see it before you sign up. If a site is vague about age, or mixes teens and adults in the same rooms, that is a reason to keep looking.
Under 18? Check with a parent or guardian before you join any chat site. Most well-run communities ask for this in their rules.
Look for real moderation
Rules only help if someone enforces them. Look for signs that moderators are active: a published set of community rules, named staff in the room, and clear consequences such as kicks and bans for people who break them.
A room that is full of spam, insults or adults asking teens for personal details is a room nobody is looking after.
Make sure you can block and report
You should be able to block or ignore anyone who bothers you, and report a problem in a couple of taps. Before you start chatting, find where those buttons are, so you are not hunting for them when you need them.
It also helps when a site explains what happens after you report something, and gives you a way to contact the team directly.
Read the privacy basics
A trustworthy site has a privacy policy you can actually find, lets you pick a nickname that is not your real name, and does not force you to share your school, location or phone number. Look for a safety guide that tells you what never to share, too.

Notice how it feels
Spend a few minutes reading before you post. Are people talking about music, games and everyday life, or is the conversation pushing toward private messages and photos? Good teen chat sites feel friendly and relaxed. If something makes you uncomfortable, trust that feeling: leave, block, and tell an adult you trust.
